Today was overcast with a promise of rain, but it didn’t! It was cool, luckily my wool kept me toasty! I found Skagway beautiful! I haven’t found any place in Alaska that I find ugly – the views are stunning everywhere I think! We slept in a little this morning as our excursion wasn’t until 11:45!
Had a delicious breakfast and then hopped on a bus over to the train depot! We took a combo trip on the White Pass and Yukon Railway! That means we took the train up to Fraser Meadows and a bus back down to Skagway!
The White Pass and Yukon Railway originally was a railroad used to transport gold prospectors from Skagway AK to Carcross in the Yukon. Construction began in 1898 and finished in 1900 but by then the gold rush was mostly over. It is a narrow gauge railroad, which means it’s width is smaller than the standard size of 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in). In this instance the width between the train tracks is 3 feet!
On our train ride, we got to listen to a pre-recorded information of the region. We had our choice of listening in 7 different languages! The headphones did not fit very well but I managed.
There were some incredible views!
